As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, I’ve returned to live with my parents during lockdown. Despite restrictions having relaxed slightly, I’m still at home. But as the title suggests, this post isn’t about my living location, but vocabulary.
One of the set-ups in the house is that I cook lunch on Saturday. We used to have sausages quite a lot on a Saturday when I was growing up, but now I’m back I’ve been adding a lot more variety to the lunch.
The other point to note is mum and dad are quite set in potatoes, so although they eat rice and other carbohydrates.
But I haven’t set to meals within the same parameters. We’ve had pasta bakes, curries, tarts and more, but the real challenge has come with some of the new words and ingredients that mum and dad have been introduced to.
One of the most memorable was “gyoza”. I decided I would also make the wrappers for the gyozas and probably slightly underestimated the amount of effort required so dad was drafted in to roll them out. Although a new word for mum and dad, we did agree the effort in for the output was too great and probably not one to make again until we visit a Chinese supermarket and get the wrappers.
But gyoza hasn’t been the only new word. Boursin is the one dad has got on board with much more excitement. The garlic and herb soft cheese hasn’t been a special of Saturday lunches but has become a firm favourite at tea time on a ritz biscuit. This was a regular special in the office so it brought a hint of normality back into life working from home.
This also isn’t the only new ingredient on the shopping list. It’s also included, coconut milk, massam paste, harissa, tortellini and more. I’m not sure these will all remain once I move back out, but at least for now their food knowledge will improve if another lockdown quiz is needed!
